A drawing: the female nude…

But first…

EPSON scanner imageWhoa!… What’s this?…
It’s another of my old black and white photographs from the days of film and darkroom photography – I think this one was taken in the late 1990s.
This eye-catching drawing was on the wall of a disused warehouse on Victoria Dock Jetty on the bank of the River Humber. It is quite old and probably dates back to the time when Pablo Picasso visited Hull in the early nineteen… No, no, of course not!…
However, this piece of work does have that lovely free-flowing confident use of line that our Pablo was famous for; look at the curve of those hips, the thighs, the nonchalantly angled feet that support the elegant frame, how delicately feminine they are – almost a hint of contraposto there I think. I suspect that the arms might have been drawn last, almost as an afterthought; they are, of course, either consciously or subconsciously, forming a heart shape, the ancient and universal emblem of love; also the artist, by placing the arms thus, has cleverly avoided the old problem of depicting reasonable looking hands – always a tricky issue in figure drawing I find; many a nice life drawing has been ruined by ropey hands… Also, I’m glad to see that the model was enjoying posing, and was smiling!
You know, she wouldn’t look too out-of-place standing next to a couple of bison or antelope in the prehistoric cave paintings at Altamira. (Altamira)
By the way, I hope that no one is upset by the word ‘fuck’ – I really think it had to be included, don’t you dear reader?…

What you have written makes so much sense. So different from the inane twaddle that I’ve seen penned about otherwise interesting modern stuff.
