Mean streets, Dulltown…

But first…
Dulltown, Europe: Today’s existential angst is centred around the word geranium.

W.P. F. RowdiesWhoa! Scary!…
Here’s another picture from my days of old-style film and darkroom photography. This one was taken here in Dulltown, probably in the 1980s or ’90s.
No, dear reader… Dulltown, er… Hull, er… the City of Kingston-upon-Hull, isn’t really as rough as my picture suggests…
My attention that day was caught by the those two striking headlines from the local paper, the Hull Daily Mail. I was standing there for a moment holding my camera, wondering how I could incorporate them into an interesting picture, when this purposeful young man came striding past… click!…
Oh, it was one of those moments when things come together by chance; suddenly the whole scene, frozen in time, takes on some sort of meaning. The slightly blurred young striding chap, the headlines, the group of youths hanging about top right, and even the newspaper seller in baseball cap, sitting in judgement on it all top left; or am I reading stuff into the picture which isn’t really there?…
The striding chap is probably a very nice young man; he’s off to meet his lovely old grannie to take her shopping and buy her a pot of tea and a piece of cake in a posh cafe; he’s frowning a little because he is a bit late and is worried about keeping her waiting, what with her dicky legs and all… The youths in the background are probably students from the local college discussing a recent lecture on quantum thermodynamics; they did struggle with it a bit, and are taking the opportunity to discuss it in detail in their lunch hour… As for the news vendor, he looks like he has just come up with a really pithy line for his new poem and is about to quickly jot it down before it evaporates…
