‘Happy Pigs’ and ‘A Walk in the Woods’…

But first…
Dulltown, Europe: Today’s existential angst is centred around the sound of the word smudge.

Well, it’s that time of year again; the annual Dulltown ‘Open’ art show is on at the city’s art gallery. ‘Open’ means that anyone can submit pieces of work for possible selection by two or three ‘special artistic people’ for inclusion in the show.
Now, I have mentioned this event before in these pages, so I won’t rant on about how much more interesting and stimulating the show was years ago, and how boring and ‘middle of the road’ it is now. Ten or twenty years ago much of the work was interestingly ‘good’ and also some was interestingly ‘bad’ – yes, even the ‘bad’ art, (if there is such a thing) had charm and an engaging naive style about it and it pleased the eye, well mine anyway.
I recall that one year someone had the bright idea of having a ‘rejects exhibition’, a show of the works rejected from the main show, put up in another gallery in the town centre – it was great, I loved it! Lots of colourful pet portraits and crazy landscapes. I wish that they’d do that now.
Anyway, I had a wander round the current exhibition yesterday afternoon. I knew what to expect, but sometimes I do enjoy a session of wincing and grimacing and emitting audible deep sighs in front of works of art.
Obviously I can’t really describe all the work to you here, but I thought that if I just picked some of the titles at random from the catalogue it might give you a feel for the sort of thing I’m talking about.

‘Woodland Landscape’
‘Waiting Orders’
‘The Patient Fisherman’
‘Winter Farmhouse’
‘Walk in the Wood’
‘Poor man’s Nude’
‘A Late Arrival’
‘Down Ferry Lane’
‘Big Sky at Skeffling’
‘Looking Down’
‘To a Land Within’
‘Happy Pigs’
‘The Rookery’
‘Skidby Mill’

Good grief, give me the rejects anytime! They sound so much fun. (funner, even?)
