Mail art postcard. No. 4532…

But first…
Dulltown, Europe: Today’s poltergeist is the gentle taciturn easy-going one.

W F 4532Yes, here is another of my recent ‘eyes series’ mail art postcards. Again, a simple collage using a couple of images snipped from an old copy of that cheap TV listings magazine What’s On TV.
Shall we consider a few adjectives at this point? How about: creepy, disconcerting, disturbing, unpleasant, surreal, fish-like, nightmarish, upsetting, cheap, striking, and eye-catching… I think those are enough…
I suppose it’s the gender thing really isn’t it? Those very feminine eyes in their rectangle of lovely smooth skin transplanted onto this rough masculine face (you could probably strike a match on those cheeks), but hold on there… look at his mouth. The proximity of the glued-on eyes seem to make his mouth seem a little feminine, don’t you think? Hm, let’s try covering up the eyes with a slip of paper and… Oh, the mouth still looks feminine…
Oh, and what about the way I cut out the pictures for these cards? I am a bit of a sloppy snipper. I don’t think these cards would suit being carefully made, with straight cuts and ninety-degree angle corners, the sloppy snipping is part of the ‘off-the-cuff’, ‘quickly done’ style of the work. How about that bottom edge? There were obviously two snips involved – I do like that little zigzag bottom left. Similarly I don’t mind that eye-catching dark triangle included top left, it looks like part of a letter ‘Y’ or a ‘V’, and of course the inclusion of the other letters lower down near his chin. They add to the ‘rough and tumble’ feel of the thing… It wouldn’t have been as ‘good’ if it had been carefully done… I like to think that Andy Warhol would approve of these cards…
