It’s the Bel rave Salon…

But first…
Dulltown, Europe: Today’s sound is the whum-thud whum-thud whum-thud of a distant car’s sound system.

Yes, this is another scanned 35mm negative from my days of old-style film and darkroom photography. I think this one was taken here in Dulltown in the 1990s.
I don’t know which attracted me most, the effect of the missing ‘G’, or that super painting of the chap with the smart haircut – does he look a bit like that Hollywood actor, popular in the ’60s and ’70s, George Hamilton? (GH) Perhaps the artist copied a picture of him. The signwriting is nice too, it’s not quite right is it? Still, whoever did it has made a pretty good attempt – better than I could do – I do like the floral flourish – it’s difficult stuff is signwriting…
What about the little square windows going diagonally up the wall? Aren’t they cute?…
It is a rather ‘cramped looking’ photo, perhaps I was in a hurry and should have spent more time composing it. Perhaps the owner was coming out of the shop, and about to shout, ‘Hoy you!… You with the camera!… Why are you taking pictures of my shop?… Are you another of those buggers from the Tax Office?…’

About Dave Whatt

Grumpy old surrealist artist, musician, postcard maker, bluesman, theatre set designer, and debonair man-about-town. My favourite tools are the plectrum and the pencil...
