Dulltown, Europe: Today’s random dictionary words are: beadman, mignonette, sthenic, weetingly, lanugo, and ventil. Please have these words looked up and placed in suitable sentences ready for Professor Mouldie first thing after breakfast tomorrow morning. Extra marks will awarded to students for overall cleanliness and having a good strong handshake.

DSCN3743Cue the echoing music… ‘Space… the final frontier…’
No no, it was just the bit of sloping concrete leading down onto the road from someone’s garage.
As I might have pontificated before, photography isn’t about smart shiny new cameras and clever editing techniques on the computer, it’s really about keeping your eyes open and observing the world around you.
I seem to recall that I walked past, or rather over, and glanced at this bit of road surface on my way into town. I walked on a few paces, then I suddenly stopped, and I thought, Hang on, that piece of concrete reminds me of something… What is it?… It’s something about those tilted diagonal scraped lines… and that dotted and speckled surface… and those spots of lichen… and the background shades of dirty grey, but with a subtle hint of red… Of course!… Yes, it’s the night sky!…
Hm, this one definitely has to have the title Astronomy… if only to point out to the viewer that perhaps this is not just a dull picture of a piece of very ordinary road… Of course the picture was taken looking straight down, but the observer easily slips into reading the surface as being vertical and sky-like. I do like the touches of greenery creeping in, they give an indication of scale of the thing – perhaps they might also suggest a bit earthbound vegetation contrasting with the sparkling great mysterious void showing off above…
