Aesthetics and vandalism…

But first…
Dulltown, Europe: Today’s fruit is the lone banana snuggled down in brown paper desperately trying to ripen.

What’s this photo then? Is it abstract art?
Well it is, and it isn’t. Then again, it isn’t, but now that it’s in my photo, I suppose it is.

It’s actually the back of a Dulltown bus seat where a couple of local teenage ne’er do wells have amused themselves during the twenty minute trip into town. Let’s call these two characters Scruff and Noddy.
‘Whoa!… Look at this Nod, if I hold my ciggy lighter against the back of this seat, the shiny blue goes pale, then yellow, and then it goes brown and bubbly… and crispy…’
‘Fuckin’ ‘ell… Cool dude!’
‘I thought it would just burn, with flames and shit, but it doesn’t – see!…’
‘Cool!… Do it again. It stinks though doesn’t it? Hey, that’s a better one! Give it here, let me have a go.’

So, you see, once the effect of a source of ignition is observed on the material, the process can become more controlled and the technique refined, and the resulting fused areas attain more aesthetically pleasing qualities. I would think, given a little encouragement Mr Scruff and Mr Noddy could apply to the Arts Council for funding to develop their interesting and thought-provoking work further…
I’ve seen far worse stuff in galleries…
