Some snatches of overheard and misheard cafe conversation…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s Raymond Chandler quotation is from The Little Sister (1949):
‘The manager of the rooming house is a most unpleasant person. He smelled of liquor. Do you drink Mr Marlowe?’
‘Well, now you mention it…’
‘I don’t think I’d care to employ a detective that uses liquor in any form. I don’t even approve of tobacco.’
‘Would it be alright if I peeled an orange?’
I caught a sharp intake of breath at the far end of the line. ‘You might at least talk like a gentleman,’ she said.

‘People not share back with me Adrian.’
‘I been bambling you know.’
‘I got tube tea.’
‘Overreaching errant emotions.’
‘Good old solid meat?’
‘I was in two minds if they come in.’
‘A new neck teacher?…’
‘It was a mortal relationship.’
‘A disagreement in inches…’
‘Memsats aloof…’
I brought it to the table Maurice.’
‘She made a sicker-dicken.’
‘Soul crisps kicking her basket?’
‘A pig ruse? How can you tell her?’
‘I was looking down a school-holder.’
‘An old lady with a fixture?’
‘Just pushing the planet…’
‘We can pick at them in London Jim.’
‘Have you got a ledge at work?’
‘I love lights with cold.’
‘He wouldn’t step back at all!’
‘Pauline should know better.’
‘Now there’s no joy in it!…’
