Mail Art Postcard No. 4697…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s quotation is from Vladimir Nabokov’s 1940 short story Solus Rex (originally in Russian):
Various objects hung at random on the blueish walls: a clock (it had already tattled about its presence), a medicine cabinet, an old barometer that indicated remembered rather than real weather, a pencil sketch of a lake with reeds and a departing duck, a myopic photograph of a leather-legginged gentleman astride a blurry-tailed horse held by a solemn groom in front of a porch, the same porch with strained-faced servants assembled on its steps, some fluffy flowers pressed under dusty glass in a circular frame…

Yes, a simple collage on bright fluorescent card using clippings from that awful British TV listings magazine What’s On TV – Damn! I always feel there should be a question mark after ‘TV’ – but of course there is no need for one.
It’s another of my cards using that great surrealist trick of Rene Magritte’s – juxtaposing a word or a title with a thoroughly inappropriate or seemingly randomly chosen image.
Oh, that brief, but very busy moment when the brain struggles to reconcile the two – buzz buzz buzz it goes as it searches for a flimsy thread of logic to tie the thing down into this flickering coloured illusion that we laughingly call reality:
Buzz buzz buzz: Is that his name then? Perhaps his first name is Del? Who the hell is this person? Why has he got a pirate hat one? Isn’t Delphinium a kind of flower? I know nothing of flowers and gardening! Why is he trying to look so desperately cool? I expect he’s an actor, normal people don’t have such blank faces, and they don’t get to dress like that. And who is the sinister untrustworthy blurred chap to the left? Ah, Delphiniums must be blue, you can see glimpses of them around the… Is this some TV series that it would be very cool to know about, and regularly watch, and mention in the pub when I go and have a drink with the lads on a Thursday night? They usually talk about football though. I wonder what I’d look like in a hat like that? I think I’d have to not bother shaving for a couple of days if I did get one. Could I wear it down the pub? Would people laugh? Suppose it’s a new trend that I am unaware of and the lads were all wearing them? Maybe they’d have flintlock pistols and parrots too? I’d like a nice flintlock pistol, I don’t think I’d better take it down the pub though, this isn’t bloody Texas… I think carrying a loaded parrot might be alright…
