1956 – ‘Bossy’ is puzzled…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s ancient Egyptian deity, appearing as a child with the full and crescent moons as a headdress, is the god Khonsu. His cult centre is Thebes and (unsurprisingly) his association is the moon. (K)

What year is it dear fellow time traveller?…
Yes, the flickering needle on the illuminated dial says that it’s Christmas Day 1955 – look, see there – young Billy has just ripped off the Christmas wrapping paper, printed with green holly leaves and red berries, from his present – a lovely bright and shiny copy of next year’s Lion Annual!… Oh, spacemen, and planets, and spaceships on the front and back covers! Fantastic!…

Ah, but sixty odd years on it is starting to look a bit battered and worn isn’t it? Yes, another scruffy old junk shop book from my modest collection. Shall we have a look at a page at random? Perhaps this time, one that hasn’t been defaced by the blue pen of Billy’s impish little sister Shirley. How about this very interesting panel from page four?

Oh dear, both Bossy and Sandy, and of course Sandy’s pals are all victims of the changes in language that take place as the decades roll by. This scene is heavily loaded with meaning that was never intended by the poor writer back in 1955. The simple phrase, ‘preparing to come out,’ jumps right off the page at you, doesn’t it?
‘They’ve got something mighty special hidden in there,’ says Bossy. Hm, I think Bossy is right – especially as this story seems to be set in a posh all boys boarding school…

I think that trend of changing the meaning of words started in the 90’s with the phrase, “it depends on what your definition of ‘is” is.” It escalated from there…..bwahaha!

  2. Jheron Bash says:

Bossy boys are often repressed homosexuals anyway …

  3. Sharon Mann says:

Yes, lots of mixed meanings here, I like the drawings. I’m off on a camping trip Dave, be back to your blog on Monday. Have a great weekend.
