Two snaps from last year…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s unusual pencil sharpener is the one shaped like a short fat right-wing politician – be gentle with that pencil!…

Doh!…
I’m still a year and two months behind in showing my photographic work dear reader – let’s try to move things along a bit –  I shall share two with you today!
First, here is another of my ‘on the bus’ photos:

When someone’s hair flops over the back of their seat like that, and it’s only inches away, there is, I reckon, a slight temptation, to poke it with your finger. I resist of course – imagine the headlines when the court case comes up – Dulltown Man in Blatant Bus Hair Poke Incident
This composition is almost heading towards being ‘abstract’ – whenever I type that word I feel for some reason, that I should put inverted commas around it – maybe I am always unsure whether the thing I’m talking about is abstract, or isn’t. This photo obviously isn’t, but I’m inviting you, the viewer, to perhaps see it as abstract – just form, colour, composition, etc…
It was those bright plasticy (or is it plasticky?) colours that attracted me… Hm, there are some nice ‘textures’ too…

And:

Well, it’s not much of a puzzle is it? The shadow is obviously that of a set of traffic lights, but what an interesting shape it is! I like the way the shadow of the pole seems to bend as it meets the pavement – a bit like at school where they’d stick a pencil in a glass of water to demonstrate refraction. And how about that bunch of detail shoved into the top right? A little football, a footballer, and of course the simple statement about the quality of the available bar meals. (It’s a sort of club/pub that likes big-screen-TV sports by the way.)
Not a great picture, but it does have a couple of nice features for the connoisseur – apart from the two main elements being pushed off to left and right in the frame leaving a bit of a gap in the middle, what I like is diagonal distortion of the shadow which happens to match the angle of our (forever tilted) running footballer… (By the way, do you think he’s trying to head that ball?) It gives the whole composition a dynamic thrust – did I just say ‘dynamic thrust’?… Oh dear…

About Dave Whatt

Grumpy old surrealist artist, musician, postcard maker, bluesman, theatre set designer, and debonair man-about-town. My favourite tools are the plectrum and the pencil...

I suppose you could stop taking pictures for a year & 2 months till you catch up – but you wouldn’t want to do that, would you? That way madness lies. Lovely snaps! 🤡

  2. Sharon Mann says:

Both very intriguing pics. I do like the unrelated imagery in snap 2. Happy Day

  3. Dana Doran says:

ooooh. First, you’re probably the reason I have a phobia about riding on buses (tee hee.) That shadowy figure! I think they created traffic lights in the image of the Moai! Probably some sort of tribute?
