Untitled linocut 2018…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s existential angst is centred around the sound of the word ‘scathing’.

I really must do some more linocuts! I have done only one so far this year – look, here it is:

It’s printed in an edition of 10, done in oil-based black ink and is on nice thin Japanese Kizuki 4 Monme paper roughly A4 in size.
Would you like me to say something about this piece, or shall we just let it sit there, glaring at us, stewing in its own juice – what a horrible expression that is, I wish that I’d not said it now…

Oh, alright, I’ll mumble on about it for just a few minutes – any questions?

‘Is this ‘abstract’ Dave?’
I suppose it must be, unless it’s a chunk sawn off an old chess or draughts (checkers) board.
‘I see that it is nearly all composed of straight lines – is that because curves are more difficult to cut in lino, and being a bit lazy and unsure Dave, you’ve just taken the easy option?’
Yes, that’s correct.
‘And could that be a pair of eyes peering out of the top left-hand corner?’
Could be.
‘Perhaps an owl?’
‘Well, what’s that single white dot in the bottom right then?’
Don’t know.
‘This looks like some mechanical thing that you have taken apart to repair, and can’t remember how it goes back together Dave.’
Thank you.
‘Don’t mention it… However, you have just about managed to make it look ever so slightly three-dimensional.’
Have I?…
‘Yes… I’ve seen far worse linocuts – at least this one jumps about a bit…’
Thank you, you are too kind…
‘I’m not too keen on triangles in art though.’
Really, why?
‘Too pointy…’

I like the checks….and the eyes….yes, the eyes. They add a bit of drama to the right angles.
