Stella perks up her tea…

But first…
Dulltown, UK: Today’s carefully selected fish names are: the Alfonsino, the Jellynose Fish, the Queen Parrotfish, the Kafue Pike, the Searobin, and the Upside-down Catfish. If you dipped your hand into the water which one would you decide to tickle?

Four Identical Drawings. 2009. Charcoal and pencil on paper probably about 24″ x 18″.

‘Well, David, I think I’d go for the Upside-down Catfish.’
‘Eh?…’
‘What’s the matter?…’
‘Look, you can’t refer to something at the top of the page, when – when you are a character in the text underneath Stella… That bit is supposed to be separate from us.’
‘Why the hell shouldn’t I? You are so very conventional David. You do surprise me sometimes! One should move the goalposts occasionally you know!’
‘Goalposts?… Well I… Would you like a couple more ginger biscuits to go with your mug of Yorkshire Tea?’
‘Yes please… I suppose you thought you were being clever, giving it that title.’
‘I am clever Stella…’
‘Hm… See, if the catfish was an upside-down one – one could see him grinning up at you, as you tickled his belly David.’
‘No, no Stella, stop it! It doesn’t seem right… Hey!’
‘What?’
‘What are you doing? Is that a hip flask?’
‘Of course. Hip flasks are quite hip these days – I’m just perking up my tea with a spot of nice whiskey… I suppose it’s to make the viewer flick their eyes around the four sections, to compare them, or to search for similarities, or discrepancies.’
‘What is?’
‘Your title of course – would you like a quick swig?’
‘Swig?’
‘Yes.’
‘No… but you see, my idea, with this drawing was to…’
‘2009!… That was ten bloody years ago David!…’
‘I know, doesn’t tempus fugit?’
‘Seems like five bloody minutes David.’
‘Indeed… So, do you like my drawing Stella?’
‘Yes, but I’d have liked it more if it had had a fish in it…’
‘But there is one, look!’
‘Oh, goodness me, so there is… How very serendipitous! And, it ties all this dialogue together pretty nicely, and brings it to a satisfying conclusion David.’
‘Yes Stella, it does seem to…’
