I suppose if you write novels or short stories, choosing suitable names to give your characters is of vital importance. You generally don’t get people with drab names in good stories do you? You want the character name when it is introduced to give some hint as to what the person is going to be like, to set the stage as it were.
‘My name is Bond… James Bond…’ – now there’s a strong steady reliable trustworthy name for someone who can cheerfully go round shooting bad people on your behalf! How about Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe? Tough guy LA private detective, but at the same time a thoughtful sensitive soul – he was named after the famous 16th c. English poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe.
My friend Veronica Crush, writer from the glory days of the Hull Surrealist League, now living in New York with tall tree surgeon and heir to a multimillion dollar fortune Monty Tick, has just sent me another batch of her spare character names. She constantly thinks up far more than she can use, and likes to give them away free to any budding, but unimaginative, writer desperate for a few good ones to add a bit of class and intelligence to their prose. Oh, and as usual V. has slipped a real name into the list, see if you can spot it! You will find the answer at the foot of the page.

    Yes – spotted that one!

  2. Dana Doran says:

Ah yes, Ida Lupino….caught that one right away….I was hoping it was Count Pistov though (reminds me of a man who lives just outside the bridge over the mote….seems he isn’t really thrilled to be stalked by my guard dog, the rat terrier Picasso!)
