Landscape No. 61. 1994. Pastel on paper, probably about 24″ x 18″

‘This one’s a bit on the drab side David…’
‘Hm… What?… I Did you say something Stella, my dear?’
‘A bit on the drab side…’
‘I’m making tea, would you care for a cup?’
‘No.’
‘No?’
‘No, I want a great big mug of it, so long as it’s Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire Tea!’
‘Drab, you say…’
‘It’s irony David – you have used every possible bloody colour you could cram in on this one!’
‘I have scones…’
‘How awful for you!’
‘You are very skittish today Stella my dear, what’s up? Is it something to do with those impenetrable sunglasses you, you haven’t taken off yet?’
‘No… Do you have nice butter for the scones David?’
‘Very nice – it’s Marks and Spencer French stuff with lumps of salt in it.’
‘Well, get those beasts sliced up and slap some butter on ’em then, I’m famished!… I suppose it’s an eye then?…’
‘Eh?’
‘Looking at us from the pale hill, at the top… A hill eye.’
‘Yes, it probably is.’
‘It looks a bit like the one in that lovely 1964 Japanese ghost film…’
‘Thank you.’
‘You’re welcome. You say this is a landscape David…’
‘No I don’t!’
‘But…’
‘Alright I do… What about it?’
‘Well, I recognise the place, the scenery, it’s that part of Yorkshire where David Hockney painted those ropey trees.’
‘Yes, that right Stella… here, have another sultana scone and stop talking crap!’
‘But you like me to talk crap David.’
‘And you like me to be snotty and short tempered with you Stella!’
‘Hm… nice tea this…’
‘Yes, isn’t it?… No, no, don’t take your sunglasses off, you look good in them.’
