No, no, this isn’t surrealism…

But first…
Dulltown, UK/Europe (Europe, only a few days left to go!): Today’s unusual pencil sharpener is the one shaped like a porcupine – it does sharpen pencils really well, but is rather difficult to hold in the hand comfortably.

Today dear reader, we are dipping into that heavy dusty old tome the Wonder World Encyclopedia from 1936 – another of my battered and scruffy junk shop / charity shop, bargains. I’d show you a photograph of the front cover, but there’s nothing worth looking at on it, it’s just drab linen with the title embossed into it.
As you see, I have given this piece the heading, ‘No, no, this isn’t surrealism’, but this lovely piece of illustration might easily be mistaken for something from that style of art. It could be something that Rene Magritte might have knocked up one rainy bank holiday weekend. Come on, let’s have a look!

Pretty good eh?
Yes, it’s the Queen Mary, launched just two years before the book came out, plonked down there in Trafalgar Square London.
Can it really be that big? Well, this is an encyclopedia, they wouldn’t cheat or exaggerate, would they?
And what a lovely piece of drawing it is – oh, those illustrators could really draw back then. I see the publishers didn’t let the artist put their name on it though. It must have taken days to produce this intricate piece.
Just reading the text at the bottom I spotted some phrases which I could have used for my title today – ‘With her nose in Whitehall’, ‘The National Art Gallery looks like a small hut’, and of course, ‘Her stern came up to the London Coliseum’.

Yes, those three quotes are all such good blog titles you might have to show us this picture three more times. You could make it an annual event, then we might have forgotten we’d already seen it! Mind you, it’s a fine piece of drawing so would stand up to repeat visits. And who knows where we’ll all be by 2023? Go on, you know you want to.

Of course I toured the Queen Mary when it was being refurbished due to its close proximity to the tiny town I lived in..a friend of mine’s father was involved in refitting it, so we got the kitchen tour so to speak. I’m sure you’re not surprised.
