Something is forming in the dust…

But first…
Dulltown, UK/Europe: (Europe, gosh we’ll be leaving tomorrow!): Today’s quotation is from Vladimir Nabokov’s 1928 novel King, Queen, Knave, which I finished re-reading a few weeks ago:
Martha danced automatically, feeling not so much the rhythm of the music as the syncopic changes between her and Franz, who was standing by the drapery with folded arms and moving eyes. She noticed Dreyer reach through the drapery; he must have opened the window a little, for it grew cooler in the room…

When I was a kid I always liked the idea of ghosts, wraiths, apparitions, flying saucers, the Loch Ness monster, God, levitation, the spirit world, precognition, angels, lucky charms – but then you grow up and learn a little bit of science and maths and dabble in more logical things, and all the lovely mysterious stuff evaporates away.
I suppose that’s why I can occasionally stand to watch the odd US ghost hunting show on the TV. They always announce at the start, sometimes on the screen, sometimes vocally in a very serious American male voice, ‘This show is for entertainment purposes only’.
Damn! They undermine the whole thing as soon as it kicks off!
I sometimes like to jot down a few lines of the tense whispered dialogue and reassuring voice-over as the plucky ‘researchers’ creep down dark dusty passages and poke around murky low ceilinged basements in shades of grey, carrying flickering torches, electronic ‘spirit detectors’, cameras, and recording devices:

Hello?… Hello?… Hello?… – there are piles of debris on every square inch of this place! – I have the thermal imaging camera – hey, what was that!… – spirit voices! – anybody here want to talk? – we will try to open ourselves up to the spirits now – I saw some more shadow figures! – this is the worst place we’ve been to so far – Hello?… Hello?… – I’m here! – she is talking to me – back then when it fell into decrepitude – I want to know who you are – a demonic presence? – there’s an energy in the elevator shaft – you seem like a nice lady… – pretty amazing! – a distant scream, ah… – scary! –  I feel the energy is changing now – huh?… – whoa, I really gotta shake this off! – shit!… – a static charge and a weird feeling now – what? – what? – a man named Rick? – what did you? – go go go!… run! run!… – this is the room where they saw the hand appear in daytime – careful! – careful! – the night hauntings, of course – oh, I see something is forming in the dust – right now!…
